And if you found yourself standing before God at the gates of heaven and He asked, “Why should I let you in?” how would you answer?
Most people would say, “I’m not sure. I’m not perfect, but I’m not a bad person either. I know I did some good things in my life. There were times I really sought God and even went to church.”
The Bible says that heaven, or eternal life, is a free gift. We do not earn it by being “good enough.” It is by God’s grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9). Just like any gift, when someone gives you one, you do not pay them back. In fact, trying to repay it can even be insulting. And if you offer something in return, even the smallest amount, it no longer remains a free gift.
Because of this, we cannot earn salvation by trying to reach heaven through good works, no matter how hard we try. Even the kindest and most loving person who has ever lived cannot enter heaven simply by being a good person.
Because we all sin (Romans 3:23), and sin has consequences. Death (Romans 6:23). James 2:10 also tells us that if we obey the whole law but fail in one point, we are guilty of breaking it all. In short, all of us are disqualified from heaven because of our sinful nature (2 Corinthians 5:21). No matter how many good works we have done (Isaiah 64:6), we cannot earn our way into heaven.
God loves us deeply (1 John 4:16). But God is also just and cannot ignore sin (Exodus 34:7). Sin must be judged, and the punishment for sin is death. So how can God be both loving and just?
You might now be asking, “How can I go to heaven and be saved if I am a sinner?”
God solved the greatest problem of humanity by sending Jesus (John 3:16). You have probably heard of Him, but who is He really, and what did He do?
God took on human form through Jesus so that He could dwell among us (John 1:1, 14). He took our sin upon Himself and died in our place so that we could be made right with God (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). He is the reason salvation is now a free gift.
That is great news, right?
So how do we receive this free gift? The Bible says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household” (Acts 16:31).
You might ask, “I believe in Jesus. Does that mean I am saved? Is it really that simple?” James 2:19 says that even demons believe in God, they even shudder, yet are they saved? So what does it truly mean to believe in Jesus?
Imagine you are alone in a sinking boat, stranded in the middle of the ocean. The nearest island is a hundred miles away. You might try to swim, relying on your own strength. Then a helicopter sees you, throws down a lifebuoy, and prepares to lift you to safety. You now have a choice. You can continue relying on yourself and swim your way to the island, or you can grab the lifebuoy and trust the helicopter to rescue you.
In the same way, saving faith means transferring your trust completely from yourself to Jesus and fully relying on Him and His finished work on the cross. We receive salvation by faith, not works, believing that Jesus paid it all and offers us forgiveness.
If you would like to receive this gift of salvation and invite Jesus into your life, here is a simple prayer you can pray:
“Lord Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself. Thank You for loving me and for paying for all my sins. I invite You into my life as my Lord and Savior. Amen.”
If you prayed this prayer in faith and received Jesus into your heart, we believe you now have eternal life and have been born again. Your sins were placed on Christ at the cross, and you now share in His new life of freedom and redemption when he rose again. Here is a promise you can hold on to: “Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).
